How often should I redesign my website?
The short answer: Whenever your business changes, or (unless you have an exceptionally timeless design) every 3-4 years.
I’m ringing in 2019 with a shiny new website. As a web designer, you might think that I would rework my site every year. But it’s kind of like that old saying “the cobbler’s children have no shoes.” I get so busy with other sites and pouring my time and creativity into client work that I sometimes neglect my own website.
Why redesign now? Well, here’s a peek at my old website. It’s bold and bright and eye-catching, but it doesn’t really reflect my personal aesthetic. The design served me well for a few years, but this year I wanted my website to look more like me.
The last quarter of 2018, I made a couple of strategic business decisions. First, I decided to work full time, actively pursuing a steady stream of web design clients. And secondly, I made the decision to focus 100% on the Squarespace platform. This decision came on the heels of a great deal of research and personal reflection. I became a Squarespace Circle Member and a Squarespace Authorized Trainer and dove into learning all I could about the platform. (If you’re wondering why I chose Squarespace, you can read more about that soon in a new blog post.)
It had also been a few years since I reworked my site and there were some BIG changes in SEO options, Squarespace functionality, and design trends that I wanted to incorporate. (Note: If you are wondering how your site stands the test of time, a website audit would be a great idea. I’d recommend booking me (or another Squarespace expert) at Sixty for an hour.)
If you look at my new website, the homepage hero image is a photo of a shelf in my house - with my favorite books and my little wooden bird. And the new color choices are all colors that I wear and love. I wanted a style that better reflected both me and my clients: in 2018, 90% of my new web design clients were women, so I wanted to embrace a more feminine feel. Moreover, I wanted a site that made me feel happy - and now I have it!
