Creator Spotlight: Clint Mally

Clint Mally - Creator Spotlight

I met Clint a couple of months ago when he reached out to me about a quote for a blog post he was working on. Since then, we’ve had a few calls and I’m so impressed with his take on content marketing. I’m happy to have him on the blog today!

Clint Mally (He/Him) is a modern and minimalist Squarespace web designer that loves to use geometric art throughout his work.

He specializes in helping small business owners and solopreneurs craft story driven copy, create a content marketing funnel, and employ SEO best practices to build organic traffic.

Before getting into marketing he paid his way through college as a stunt performer at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament riding horses, jousting, and sword fighting for a living.

After earning his Master in Teacher and spending years in the classroom, he takes his ability to break down complex skills into simple step-by-step tutorials and frameworks for Squarespace web design and content marketing.

In addition to building websites he creates free Squarespace and content marketing tutorials on his Youtube channel.

He is also the host of The School Of Content podcast where he talks with experts in the field of content marketing to help small business owners and solopreneurs elevate their digital brand.

Hi Clint! Tell us a little about how your business got started.

As a former educator I learned that I loved creating content and teaching but didn't want to be in front of a class all day.

I started my own online fitness business where I had to learn all the marketing things (Web design, social media, YouTube, etc) and realized I loved the creation side of business but not the managing side of business.

Because having a website was the singularly most important thing to elevate my business, and because I had so much fun doing designing websites, I took everything I was learning and helped out my other friends who were small business owners.

They said, "Clint, it seems like you really like this. Maybe you should just do this."

They were right. I left the fitness industry and have just been helping people with Squarespace web design and content marketing ever since.

How did you come to work with Squarespace?

I built websites in all the platforms, Wordpress, Kajabi, and Google. And yes, there are Google Sites, and mine was terrible.

When I discovered Squarespace, and really when I discovered that people could actually earn a living designing Squarespace websites, I went all in.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given as an entrepreneur?

Scaling or doing more does not equal happiness. You don't have to have employees, a brick and mortar office, or make multiple six figures to live a happy life. If you are doing what you love, and it's simple, and it's just you, that's okay too.

If you had a piece of advice for designers, or something you wish you'd figured out much sooner than you did, what would it be?

There is more than enough business to go around. Everyone needs a website. No one is your competitor. Christy Price is literally spotlighting other Squarespace designers on her own website. (aw, thanks Clint!)

This does not hurt her.
She is paying it forward.
Community is everything.

Be willing to love and share your time with people just for the sake of helping them out. Don't be afraid to ask people for a conversation. The most amazing web designers and content marketers are also the nicest people you will ever meet.

You need people in your life to encourage you, guide you, support you, and help you out. And you need to be willing to do the same for other people in the space too.

Only good things come from building these kinds of partnerships.

Do you have any words of wisdom for those creators looking to get into the passive income world?

Before you charge anybody anything you need to make sure that you are creating content that helps people for free. This allows you to see what really works, build trust, and figure out what people actually need.

Is there a product you've created that you're particularly proud of? Can you tell us a little about its main benefit or where this tool can be most helpful?

I am most proud of my free Squarespace web design courses called Squarespace School. These are video tutorials and written guides with images that help people plan, design, optimize, and launch a completely custom website.

My courses also come with a free and fillable guide that students can use to on-board clients or create their own website.

Squarespace web design wasn't easy for me to learn. I had to take a bunch of courses and spend thousands of dollars to figure it out.

I wanted to create an equitable path for aspiring Squarespace web designers to break into the industry.

I would love for Squarespace web design to be thought of as a trade, just like carpentry or plumbing, that helps people gain financial independence and allows them to create art for a living.

When you aren't hunkered down at the computer, creating amazing Squarespace tools and resources, how do you like to spend your spare time?

I love reading a good book, watching my dog be anti-social at the dog park, spending time in nature, and making meals with my amazing wife of 11 years.

What is your go-to karaoke song?

Chestnuts Roasting Over An Open Fire. I sing this weekly in the shower and sing it year round.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I want aspiring designers to know that there is space for you here. If you do not fit into the typical archetype for what you think a Squarespace web designer is or what a content marketer should be, that is a good thing.

Your experiences, even if they seem to be unrelated to web design, have somehow brought you to this place reading this now. And if you are reading this, you belong.

Diversity, having a variety of life from varying backgrounds and experiences, only makes for a more healthy ecosystem.

If you are different from other people in this space...this is a good thing.
It will help you stand out.
And, no matter what, I am glad you are here.
