Squarespace Business or Commerce Plan: Which one is right for you?

Note: This post has been revised to reflect updated pricing from 2022.

Should you consider moving from the Business plan to the Basic Commerce plan? If you pay annually like I do, the Squarespace Business plan costs $23/month and the Basic Commerce plan costs $27/month, a difference of $4/month. So when does it make sense to switch?

There are some great features that the Basic Commerce plan offers that the Business plan doesn’t, so if you need any of these additional commerce features, you’ll definitely want to go with the Basic Commerce plan:

  • Checkout on your domain. Customers stay at yourdomain.com throughout the checkout process, instead of being redirected to secure.squarespace.com

  • Customer accounts. Your customers can choose to create accounts for faster future checkouts, great if you get a lot of repeat customers.

  • Additional analytics. Track revenue as well as traffic sources to your products.

  • Related products. Show additional products in the same category at the bottom of your product detail page.

  • ShipStation label printing. Bulk print shipping labels. US, Canada, UK, and Australia only.

  • Automatic sync with Xero. Integration with Xero accounting software, for US users only.

Transaction Fees

If you don’t necessarily need any of those features, there is one other big difference between the Business and Basic Commerce plan. The Business plan charges you a 3% transaction fee on every sale, in addition to your payment processor fee. The Basic Commerce plan doesn’t charge that additional fee. So, based on my math, if your sales exceed about $100/month you should go with the Basic Commerce plan. Here’s how that works:

Monthly sales <$100 = <$3 fee on Business plan. This is less than the $4 difference per month between the Business and Basic Commerce plan. Stick with the Business plan unless you need those additional features above.

Monthly sales >$200 = >$6 fee on Business plan. If your sales are consistently in this range or trending up, make the switch to the Basic Commerce plan and save money.
