How to Change the Built-in Domain Name in Squarespace

Every Squarespace website comes with a built-in domain, also called a Squarespace URL, like orpheus-oboe-75ha.squarespace.com. These are automatically generated by Squarespace, but you can change your built-in Squarespace domain name to make it look more professional and make it faster to login.

Why Bother Renaming Your Built-In Squarespace Domain?

Let’s face it, the default Squarespace domain names like harmonica-apricot.squarespace.com can be fun, but aren't very helpful when you're trying to keep track of projects. Renaming these domains can:

  • Boost Organization: Automatically makes your dashboard cleaner and helps with searching through projects.

  • Simplify Identification: See at a glance if you are in the right website (rather than a backup copy, for example).

  • Quick Logins: Just go to yournewname.squaerspace.com/config to log in to the site.

There are a few ways to access this setting in Squarespace. Watch the video above or try out the steps below.

Accessing Domain Settings: Method 1

First up, let's try the Cog icon.

  1. Look for the Cog icon at the bottom of your dashboard panel.

  2. Click it to enter Settings.

  3. Navigate to Domains and Email.

  4. Finally, select Domains.

This method is straightforward, but since Squarespace likes to move things around occasionally, here are a couple of other options:

Accessing Domain Settings: Method 2

Using the search function is another smooth approach, especially in Squarespace 7.1.

  1. Look for the Search icon above your Website menu panel.

  2. Click the Search icon.

  3. Type "domains" and select it from the list.

This method is quicker, especially if typing is more your style.

Accessing Domain Settings: Method 3

For the keyboard warriors (I’m right here with you), the “/” shortcut can be your ticket to efficiency.

  1. Click anywhere on your website.

  2. Press the forward slash key / on your keyboard.

  3. Type "domains".

This is a neat trick if you prefer hands-on keyboard navigation.

Renaming Your Squarespace Built-In Domain

Once you’re in the domain settings, you can easily rename your built-in domain.

  1. Click on your current built-in domain.

  2. Delete or Highlight the existing name and type in your new domain in the same place, like "dream-vacation".

  3. Hit save and confirm.

And now your domain reflects something meaningful.

Examples of Effective Domain Names

Stuck on what to rename your domain? Here are some ideas:

  • Personal Projects: [YourName]-portfolio, [ProjectName]-dev.

  • Client Projects: [ClientName]-site, [ServiceType]-design.

Naming your domains thoughtfully can prevent headaches later on.

Ensuring the Changes Are Reflected

After renaming, ensure everything's updated:

  • Check Your Dashboard: The new name should appear.

  • View Your Site: Make sure the URL works as expected.

  • Check Your Email: You and every other person added to the site permissions will get an email that the domain was updated.

Keeping an eye on these updates ensures a smooth transition.

Managing Multiple Squarespace Websites

Juggling multiple websites can be challenging. Here’s how to keep it tidy:

  • Consistent Naming: Stick to a pattern or theme.

  • Categorize: Tag sites by project type or status in your dashboard

These habits will keep your dashboard a place of zen.
