How to Not Get Hacked over Wifi
Three years ago, I was working from a local coffee shop when my credit card info was stolen. I was on the coffee shop’s wifi and I forgot to take precautions when I made a purchase online. I’m not sure what other information the hackers got, but I freaked out. Then changed my passwords, ran anti-virus software, and got a new credit card.
I’m still a fan of working from coffee shops - especially the ones with free wifi - but now I take steps to ensure my information is secure.
Here’s how to NOT get hacked over wifi.
STEP 1
Make sure you are using the RIGHT wifi. Hackers will sometimes set up a fake or “spoofed” network (this happens frequently at hotels) to intercept all of the information being transferred on that network. Make sure the wifi name is exactly right and beware of being asked to download anything when you first connect.
STEP 2
Disable file sharing. This keeps your computer from showing up on a network. On a Mac, go to the Apple Menu and select System Preferences. Choose Sharing and then unselect everything on the left side checklist.
STEP 3*
Use a VPN. After my own hacking incident, I did some research and learned that using a Virtual Private Network was the best way to ensure I was keeping my information safe. My absolute favorite is from Namecheap (yep, they also sell domain names), and you can get a top quality VPN for unlimited devices (this is HUGE), for less than $2/month. Get the deal here.
After purchasing, you’ll download the app for your device, then log in using your Namecheap username and password. Just remember to turn on your VPN each time you’re on a public wifi network.
